Aung San Suu Kyi, after the mass killing of Rohingyas, may face legal action from the International Court amounting to action against what can be regarded as genocide. This was confirmed by the UN’s High Commissioner for Human Rights, Zeid Ra’ad al-Hussein. UN previously had described the displacement and the deaths of the Rohnigya people as a text book example of ethnic cleansing.
Zeid Ra’ad al-Hussein, earlier has called for criminal investigation. He further said, “The gravity and the scale would suggest a commission of a crime that requires a response by the international community.”
“The question of intentionality going back to the genocidal acts … it’s very hard to establish that because the thresholds are high. And that’s why we continue to say that a court has to do this. But it wouldn’t surprise me in the future if a court were to make such a finding on the basis of what we’re seeing.
“Because of the organisation and planning that seems to have gone into this. We can infer that from the actions on the ground.”
Ms Suu Kyi was personally warned by Mr. Zeid on a telephone to stop killing earlier in the year. However, this advice has fallen into the deaf ears.
There is no doubt that Ms. Suu Kyi has sanctioned the genocide against the Rohingya community. Being the defacto ruler of the country, it is not possible that she had no knowledge and approval of it. “There’s the crime of omission,” Zeid said.
“Given the scale of the military operations clearly these would have to be decisions taken at a high enough level.”
“The international news media was awash with imagery of burning villages, of claims that atrocities were being committed. So, certainly one can make the argument that there was time sufficient for a halt to the operations and inquiries to be launched. And that didn’t seem to happen, so I’m quite sure, that yes, a future jurisdiction in a court would probably ask those very questions.”
There is no doubt that Aung San Suu Kyi has fallen from her grace. Gone are the days when she was revered as a lady committed to a just cause with immense sacrifices. She is now considered as a war criminal and blood thirsty despot. Whether she did it intentionally and self willingly or by a compulsion to a situation is not known. What can be derived from the episode is her political benefits are more important than lives of millions.!
