Aadhaar Verdict: SC upholds validity minus ‘invasive’ tilt

In a historic judgment Wednesday, the Supreme Court upheld the constitutional validity of the Aadhaar (Targeted Delivery of Financial and Other Subsidies, Benefits and Services) Act, 2016, by a 4:1 majority. The judgment was pronounced by a bench of Chief Justice Dipak Misra, Justices AK Sikri, AM Khanwilkar, DY Chandrachud, and Ashok Bhushan. Justice Chandrachud's views dissented from the majority.


During the last two years of the ongoing NDA regime, there have been several cases of firing on farmers, killing quite a lot of them: six in Mandsaur, MP; seven in Jharkhand; thirteen in Thoothukudi, TN. No action has been taken against the police in any of these cases. Very little, or delayed, and in some cases, no relief has been provided to the deceased farmers' families.
