Delhi’s pollution and smog has reached proportions where the schools were forced to call off their daily classes! This is something unprecedented and one would wonder if there is any second example to this anywhere in the world! Although, Delhi is a metropolis, its public transport system is much weaker than any other big city in India. This leads to over dependency on person vehicles which are quite a necessity in Delhi. The overcrowding of the vehicles is the primary cause for such high level of population. There should increase in the number of buses, which is less than 5,000 currently that can shift the over dependence of its public on their personal vehicles.

There should also be more facilitation to ease the hassles faced by the pedestrians. There are some subways made in the important crossings, but those subways are hardly used. The lack of maintenance and fear of burglary, rape et al. keeps pedestrians from using them. This forces the pedestrians taking autos even for a short distance, which otherwise could have walked through.

Although, Delhi has more trees than any other metropolitan city in India, more trees, hedges, and bushes should be planted along the thorough fares.

Another key factor for such high pollution level is the existence of farm lands inside the city. Although, the farm lands are environment friendly, but the farm fires carried out by the farmers burning crop stubble is major source of smog, especially in the winter. The fact that farmers are often stressed financially makes it a cost effective way of clearing their fields for the next sowing. Although, technical know-how for the alternative is available, these are not yet been implemented in Delhi. The NCR, being consisting of three different states did not help for the cause either. Coupled with it is the lacking of political will and large sum of money to the tune of Rs. 2,000 crores required for it are also responsible for the pollution coming from farm fires. The three states that cover NCR should be brought together so that a common solution can be found and they may also agree to fund the ramification measures jointly.

These steps can improve the pollution of level of Delhi which is going beyond a level that can impair the very functioning of the city. According to BBC, Delhi is one of the most polluted cities in the world that needs drastic steps and political will for remediation.
