Kashmir came to a standstill because of widespread outrage over the rape of a three-year-old girl from Bandipora district’s Sumbal area. The victim was allegedly raped by a neighbor at Malikpora village. Protests have rocked the valley with people calling for justice. As per reports, people expressed anger when a local school in Sumbal area issued a certificate declaring the rapist, who is in police custody, a minor. The accused is stated to be a paedophile and police say he may have abused other local minor girls as well.

J&K Governor Satya Pal Malik expressed deep shock over the heinous crime. He directed the IGP Kashmir to work swiftly in the case and ensure that the culprit gets exemplary punishment for the shameful act. The Governor has also talked to religious leaders of different communities and appealed to the people to remain calm. The Mutahida Majlis Ulema (MMU) issued a statement strongly condemning the gruesome and brutal rape of the child.
The MMU said that the incident has not only left the conscious of every Kashmiri badly shaken but brought every head down in shame. The amalgam of various religious bodies said the incident calls for a major introspection. Meanwhile, the Itehadul Muslimeen president Maulana Masroor Abbas Ansari termed the incident as a blot on the face of humanity. “The presence of people with such ill intentions are detrimental for the society known for upholding its moral values for centuries. There is a dire need for evolving a joint strategy to deal with these elements.”

The cleric further said that there should be no leniency to the person involved in the act. Furthermore, he urged the people of Kashmir to forge unity on all fronts and not to get swayed by rumors being spread by vested interests working to trigger sectarian frenzy in Kashmir.
