Is Mamata Banerjee really anti-majority?

Hindus and the media have become accustomed to expect an all out dominance of the majority community with any aberration taken as anti-Hindu. There is no reason to believe the Ms. Banerjee is out rightly pro-minority and anti-majority that have been the perception generally across India.

Mamata Banerjee is awfully busy these days opening Durgapujas in various localities of Kolkata and even in the district towns. In fact, she is inaugurating 8-10 pujas per day! The request letters are pouring in her Kalighat residence and at her office in Nabanna, as well as telephone and personal requests from his close associates some of whom are honchos of local durga puja committees. The spree of her opening has started from September 19, the day of Mahalaya. It is learned that while giving speech to the inauguration functions, she is also reciting Durga Mantra from her memory.

One may wonder, instead of visiting so many puja mandap, what would have happened had she visited so many mosques? Immediately the mainstream media and the overwhelming social media would have branded her as appeaser of the Muslims. Instead of reciting Durga mantra, had she recited the verses of Koran, she would have been brandished as anti-Hindu.

It is also learned that high profile puja committees receive funds from the TMC. Do we remember the hue and cry of the media when she donated money to the Maulavis of West Bengal? Question also remains if the media can be critical of Ms. Banerjee for donating money to Maulavis, why are they quiet that the same person is also donating money to the Durga Puja committees? It shows that the beneficiary of the majority community is taken for granted in India!

There is lot of critical articles written about banning Durga immersion on the day of Muharram. The social media is going haywire on this issue. However, one should remember that strictly from religious point of view, the immersion should take place on Dashami (Dussera). And there is no restriction on that day to immerse the Durga deity. Therefore, Ms. Banerjee is not infringing on the religious practice of the Hindus. Just like she is allowing the Hindus to practice their religion as per scriptures, she is also protecting the religious practice of the Muslims on the day of Muharram.

Thus, on religious practices she has largely being equal to both communities. But that is far cry from the situation of many other states, where majority Hindus is given clear preference over the minorities. In this way, Hindus and the media have become accustomed to expect an all out dominance of the majority community with any aberration taken as anti-Hindu. There is no reason to believe the Ms. Banerjee is out rightly pro-minority and anti-majority that have been the perception generally across India.
