1.21 million deaths in 2020, on average 328 deaths daily due to traffic accidents: Report

According to government data, despite COVID-19 lockdowns, India recorded 1.20 lakh cases of “deaths due to negligence connected to road accidents” in 2020, averaging 328 people per day.

The National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) disclosed in its annual ‘Crime India’ report for 2020 that 3.92 lakh lives had been lost in three years owing to negligence related to traffic accidents. According to the report, 1.20 lakh such deaths were registered in 2020, but 1.36 lakh in 2019 and 1.35 lakh in 2018. According to the NCRB, which is part of the Union Home Ministry, the country has documented 1.35 lakh hit-and-run cases since 2018. There were 41,196 hit-and-run instances in 2020, compared to 47,504 in 2019 and 47,028 in 2018.

According to the data, on average, 112 hit-and-run cases were reported across the country every day in the previous year. According to the data, the cases of causing harm by hasty or careless driving on public roads totaled 1.30 lakh in 2020, 1.60 lakh in 2019, and 1.66 lakh in 2018, while the cases of grievous harm totaled 85,920, 1.12 lakh, and 1.08 lakh, respectively.

Meanwhile, 52 deaths due to negligence in train accidents were registered across the country in 2020, up from 55 in 2019 and 35 in 2018, according to the research.

According to NCRB data, India recorded 133 incidents of “deaths owing to medical malpractice” in 2020, up from 201 in 2019 and 218 in 2018. As per the report, there were 51 cases of “deaths owing to civic entities’ negligence” in 2020, 147 cases in 2019, and 40 cases in 2018.

Another 6,367 “deaths due to other negligence” incidents were registered in 2020, up from 7,912 in 2019 and 8,687 in 2018, according to the data. According to the NCRB, the country was under complete lockdown from March 25, 2020, to May 31, 2020, because of the COVID-19 epidemic, during which time public space movement was “very limited.”

“Crimes against women, children, and senior citizens, theft, burglary, robbery, and dacoity have thus declined,” it said, while Covid-related enforcement has resulted in an increase in cases registered under “disobedience to order duly promulgated by a public servant (Section 188 IPC),” “Other IPC Crimes,” and “Other State Local Acts.”
