After free metro ride for women gimmick didn’t go down well with the Centre, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is luring Delhiites with no bill for residents consuming 200 units of electricity.
The Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal announced the scheme saying power consumed between 201 and 400 units will be at half price as the Delhi government will provide a 50% subsidy. Kejriwal said his government’s basic commitment is to provide electricity to all, even to the poor and those who cannot afford to pay their bills.
“Keeping in view such poor consumers we have taken this decision,” the chief minister explained. “For consuming 200 units hardly a fridge, one television, 2 bulbs and I fan is used,” he said.
Kejriwal hoped that the Delhi government’s initiative will make people use electricity wisely. He said no substantial increase is expected in subsidy given on electricity. The Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia tweeted, “Just like good education and healthcare, a basic quantum of electricity to run lights and fans at home is essential for that.”

However, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) called AAP’s initiative an election strategy. Delhi BJP chief Manoj Tiwari said the this scheme was the result of BJP’s struggle. “We can see it by two angles that it is the strategy to attract people before the elections. They have looted 7,000 crore from Delhi people. When will they refund that,” Tiwari asked.
The people of Delhi can now take advantage of this scheme and consume electricty wisely as well as use the money from their electricity bills for other things.
