Parkinson’s disease is a disorder of the central nervous system. Those who suffer from this disease often face muscular spasms and sudden involuntary tremors. Due to this holding anything with their hands becomes difficult. The tribal activists Mr. Swamy has cited the same reason while he asked for a straw and a sipper to drink water as his hands shake when he tries to drink. He also asked for bail on medical grounds. The National Investigation Agency has sought time or the same.

What is the Bhīma Koregaon case?

On January 1 2018, in Bhīma Koregaon village major violence took place at the vicinity of a war memorial. Some provocative speeches were made in the “Elgar Parishad conclave” that took place a day before at Pune’s Shaniwarwada. Row over the arrest

As he was an advert activist who made headlines for his work towards the development of the tribal people, his arrest in October shook the nation and called for outrages across the country. The Jharkhand CM Hemant Soren also accused the government and said that they have crossed “all limits” with the arrest of Father Swamy. Other political leaders like Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan, CPI (M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury and DMK leader Kanimozhi also framed this arrest as an “attack on civil liberties.”

Parkinson’s and father Swamy

The 83 year old activist suffers from Parkinson’s disease which is a nervous system disorder. He has issues with holding stuff in his hand and thus, he sought for a sipper and straw to drink water inside the jail. He has also asked for a bail plea, citing his health conditions. In his bail application, he mentioned “I cannot hold a glass as my hands are unsteady due to Parkinson’s,” thus he needs straw and a sipper for drinking water. He has spent almost one month in the Taloja central jail and NIA has sought time for accepting his bail plea.

The PolicyTimes suggestion

  • The father and the activist is 83 years old which is deliberately a senior age to be inside the jail. Thus if he seeks bail or demands a straw or sipper to drink water inside the jail, the authorities must look up to it and allow the same as well.
  • He worked as an activist for the tribal people and thus, he must be treated with respect till he is proven guilty. He is still an accused of the case and not proven guilty. Therefore, the judicial authorities must allow the bail plea and set him free till he is proven guilty.
