In a bid to control the spread of coronavirus, Australia announced one of the world’s toughest lockdown periods of 6 days. The complete shutdown would include the closure of schools, cafes, restaurants along with a ban on weddings and funeral processions as well. Also, only one person from every family would be allowed to go out for any kind of essential activity.
The rules of the shutdown
In this complete shutdown of 6 days, the government has decided that no schools, colleges, cafe restaurants, or any such public place would be open for the general public. Also, weddings and funerals with social gatherings have been prohibited. Only one person from every family is allowed to go outside in regards to anything essential. Not only in Australia, but the US state of California also imposed a rule on going out of the common people from 10 pm to 5 am. This restriction would be implemented until December 21.
This complete shutdown would prove to be the “circuit breaker”
The spread of coronavirus can be controlled by breaking the “chain” and that is what this complete shutdown would do in Adelaide in Australia. Steven Marshall, the state premier said in the read, “the state needed ‘circuit breaker’ to contain the wider outbreak. It’s really worrying because people who become infected are not showing the typical symptoms. We want to get out of it as quickly as we can.” It is necessary to break the chain as social gatherings can lead to more infections in the coming times. Hope this complete shutdown of 6 days would help in improving the situation in Adelaide.
Hope the situation is controlled by this step
The entire world is suffering from the pandemic and thus, taking such a step to control the spread is a good move by the Australian government. The governor of California, Gavin Newsom said regarding the matter, “The virus is spreading at a pace we haven’t seen since the start of this pandemic and the next several days and weeks will be critical to stop the surge. We are sounding the alarm.” Globally the coronavirus cases have surpassed the mark of almost 56 million and if such timely measures are not taken then it can come back stronger in the second wave.
The Policy Times suggestion
- It is good of the Australian government to take such a decision to prevent the spread of coronavirus in the second wave. It will definitely help in lowering the corona positive cases in the surrounding regions.
- However, the law must be lenient in case of emergencies and people must be allowed to perform at least the funerals but without gathering crowds.
- The common people must abide by the rules and be careful themselves to avoid further spreading of the deadly virus.
