Bangladesh has for the first time been elected to the International Committee of the Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions (UNESCO) for the first time in 2021-2025. This election was held at the 7th General Assembly of the member states of the Convention held on 1-4 June 2021 through virtual medium and Bangladesh was unanimously elected from Asia and Pacific region.
In the June 4 election, 12 of the 24 member states were elected for the next four years. Bangladesh, France, Norway, Georgia, Serbia, Cuba, Jamaica, Vietnam, Burundi, Madagascar, the United Arab Emirates, and Palestine were elected as new members of the International Committee.
UNESCO Assistant Director-General of Culture Ernesto Renato Ottone in his speech thanked Bangladesh for coming forward to introduce the UNESCO-Bangladesh Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman International Award in the field of the creative economy and called upon all member states to nominate and he called for spontaneous participation in the initiative to encourage people to contribute to the creative economy.
It may be mentioned that the “UNESCO-Bangladesh Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman International Award for Creative Economics” will be presented for the first time at the 41st General Meeting of UNESCO to be held in November 2021.
