The Policy Times Dhaka Bureau (June 02):
Before criticizing the government, the BNP has asked the world media to look at the development picture of the country, said the Minister of Information and Broadcasting of the Government of Bangladesh and the Joint General Secretary of the Awami League Mr. Hasan Mahmud.
On Tuesday (June 1) at the National Press Club in the capital Dhaka, on the occasion of the 52nd death anniversary of Tafazzal Hossain Manik Mia, the pioneer of the world of Bangladeshi journalism, Tafazzal Hossain Manik Mia and Dainik organized by Swadhin Patrapad Pathak Samiti, Bangladesh said this in a contemporary context at the discussion meeting titled ‘Role of Ittefaq’. Citing a recent article in the world-renowned Bloomberg magazine, “South Asia should pay attention to their exceptional star” (South Asia should pay attention to its standout star). India and Pakistan should learn the mantra of rapid development from their one-time least developed neighbor Bangladesh, the article said. In 1971, Pakistan was 80 percent richer than Bangladesh and now Bangladesh is 45 percent richer than them. And a few days ago, the cabinet secretary of Bangladesh said that the per capita income of that country is now 2222 dollars, surpassing that of India.
In other words, after 50 years of independence, Bangladesh has surpassed Pakistan and in many cases India in all indicators. Hassan said, “Sadly, many people do not see or understand this development progress. Their politics is only stuck in the health of Begum Khaleda Zia. They do not seem to be concerned about the health or development of the people of the country. I will request the BNP, including Mr. Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, that there are many educated people in their party, that they should look at the development picture of Bangladesh in the world media, including today’s Bloomberg article, before criticizing. ‘
Describing the role of the media as very important in shaping the mindset of the nation, the Information Minister said, “The media can flow the society in the right direction as well as in the right direction if it tries.” The contribution of many dedicated people including Tafazzal Hossain Manik Mia, the pioneer of the world of journalism, on the path of writing Bangladesh under the leadership of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu through many struggles is everlasting. Tafazzal Hossain Manik Mia did not use the media for personal or business interests, there is a lot to learn from him. ‘
Former editor of the now-defunct weekly and secretary-general of Manik Mia Foundation Syed Tasharraf Ali, politician Md. Nasirul Haque, journalist Gias Uddin Kusum, Manik Lal Ghosh, and others spoke under the chairmanship of SM Jamal Uddin.
