Why Buddhist Studies is Necessary to promote in India?
The world is grappling with war and terrorism. So, this move is much required at this time. Bhagwati Prakash Sharma, vice-chancellor of Gautam Buddha University said, “India has the natural heritage of Buddhism, and by combining the new information compiled through the archaeological excavations, we can make it more meaningful. This will also help in building a co-relation in today’s life”. The great monastic traditions of India need to be audited and reviewed. Sunaina Singh, vice-chancellor of Nalanda university said, “A kind of enlightened approach is required, which will also help in shaping the psyche of the youngsters”.
Role of “Buddhist Studies” in The Competitive Race of India and China
Besides developing India as an educational hub, the Government is also aiming to counter China, which is trying hard to become a torch-bearer of the Buddhist nations. For a long time, portraying itself as a major center of Buddhism in South-East Asia, China has been promoting Buddhist studies. Anand Singh, dean of Nalanda University said, “Emphasis on Buddhist studies is a part of Track-II diplomacy as it will play a major role in boosting the economy and culture, where India wants to compete with China if not dominated”.
