On Sunday, a major report stated that due to the spike in the Covid-19 cases across the continent which is also called the second wave of the global pandemic, the government has imposed another lockdown for which the people of Europe came out on the streets to protest against it.
Breakout of the protest in different countries
In Germany, people clashed with the police over the new Covid measures forcing the police to use water cannons, pepper spray, and batons to disperse the people. In London, people defied police who warned of arrest and potential fines. In Finland, the police stated that 400 people without masks were packed tightly to gather in the capital Helsinki. About one thousand protesters participated in a demonstration against the new lockdown measures in Austria. More than 5000 protesters met for a silent march in the community of Liestal in Switzerland.
The response of the Police to Saturday’s Protest
The response of the police to the protest of Saturday was under special scrutiny in light of the outrage over the Met’s handling of a vigil last weekend following the death of Sarah Everard in South London which resulted in the arrest of four people. Even the recent events have also sparked debate about the legal curbs on the protest during the pandemic. Sixty lawmakers even have signed a letter giving a warning that “criminalizing protest is not acceptable and is arguably not lawful”.
TPT Policy Advocacy & Recommendations
- Another lockdown can devastate the economy of all the countries to a huge scale. On one hand, the government is trying to lower the rate of infection by imposing another lockdown but on the other hand, it will be much difficult to revive the economy of every country.
- The protest due to another lockdown is disrupting the lives of the people which is resulting in several arrests. And it is very difficult for the whole world to cope with another lockdown.
