The Indian Computer Emergency Response Team(CERT-In) has detected various vulnerabilities in the popular messaging platform that could lead to data breaches of the users. The agency stated that the vulnerabilities have been detected in software that has “WhatsApp and WhatsApp Business for Android prior to v220.127.116.11 and WhatsApp and WhatsApp Business for iOS prior to v2.21.32”.
Reason Behind the Vulnerabilities
The CERT-In is the national agency that tackles cyber attacks and also guards Indian cyberspace. The CERT-In clearly stated the major reason behind these vulnerabilities that “exist in WhatsApp applications due to a cache configuration issue and missing bounds check within the audio decoding pipeline”. The agency further added, “Successful exploitation of these vulnerabilities could allow the attacker to execute arbitrary code or access sensitive information on a targeted system”.
What Can the Users’ Do to Prevent The Threat?
TPT Policy Advocacy & Recommendations
- WhatsApp security has become a challenge nowadays, making it a frequent target of hackers. The balancing act of WhatsApp has become much harder which is threatening the users to a large extent. This is not the first time that the users are facing issues regarding the Facebook-owned messaging app. The Government needs to tackle the issues well so that the popular messaging platform does not lead to data breaches of the users.
- In India, the use of social media has become more common. And with it, the data breach has become a ‘serious issue’. Privacy of the citizens is guaranteed as a fundamental right by the Indian Constitution. But due to the increasing cases of data breaches, the users are worried at every step. New policies and effective ‘Data Protection Bill’ must be imposed by the Government so that the data of the users remain protected at every cost.
