10 tugboats are being procured for transporting dredgers and non-propelled vessels to different parts of the country. Each tugboat at Boulevard Pool weighs 12 tons. The Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) under the Bangladesh Ministry of Shipping is collecting these. It will cost 16 crores 96 lakh rupees. Apart from these, the process of collecting seven more tugboats is underway. It will cost around Tk 96 crore to collect them. State Minister for Shipping Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury MP on Saturday (June 12th) inaugurated the construction of 10 bollard pool tugboats (kill laying) at the Bangladesh Navy Dockyard and Engineering Works Limited in Sonakanda, Narayanganj.
The state minister said Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman felt the need to protect rivers in 1972. Bangabandhu collected seven dredgers for digging waterways. No government has collected dredgers since 2006. Under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, 34 dredgers have been procured in the last 10 years and another 35 dredgers are being procured. The government has adopted a master plan to excavate 10,000 km of waterways. Eviction activities on illegal riverbanks are continuing.
Among others, Secretary of the Ministry of Shipping Mohammad Mesbah Uddin Chowdhury, Assistant Chief of Naval (Materials) Rear Admiral M Shafiul Azam, Chairman of BIWTA Commodore Golam Sadeq, Dockyard and EngineeringWorks Ltd. Managing Director Commodore SM Moniruzzaman, Project Director BIWTA Chief Engineer Dredging) MA Matin was present.
Tugboats of 10 bollard pools are being procured under the project titled “Procurement of 35 dredgers and ancillary vessels and construction of necessary infrastructure” under implementation by BIWTA. Dockyard and Engineering Works Limited, a Bangladesh Navy company, will complete the construction of the tugboats by May 2023.
BIWTA undertook the project of procuring 161 vessels including 35 dredgers to increase the number of dredger fleets and increase the dredging capacity to 325.60 lakh cubic meters. The 35 notable dredgers of the project are – two 28 inches, eight 24 inches, eight 20 inches, nine 18 inches, two 12 inch cutter suction dredgers, two trailing suction hopper dredgers, two water injection / jetting dredgers, Two self-propelled pontoons mounted grab dredger. The cost for procurement of 161 vessels including 35 dredgers will be Rs. 4469.03 (four thousand four hundred and ninety-nine crore three lakh rupees.
