Amid all the increasing numbers of the positive cases in the world and Iran have 29,084 active cases the Europeans have decided to aid Iran with medical supplies. They have sent medical supplies to Iran under the transaction of Instrument in Support of Trade Exchanges (INSTEX) i.e a European special-purpose vehicle (SPV) established in January 2010 whose mission is to facilitate non-USD and non-SWIFT transactions with Iran to avoid breaking U.S. sanctions.

The first shipment was sent across on 31st March 2020 with medical supplies using this INSTEX mechanism. The shipment includes sufficing the needs of Iran to cope with the outbreak of the deadly pandemic. The US so far is completely unbothered with this present act. However, France Germany and the United Kingdom have successfully had their first transaction said the German Ministry.

This was the first transaction that comes more than a year later the nuclear deal. Was signed between Iran and the world powers in 2015 announced the creators of INSTEX. Iran’s economy had been crumbled since May 2018 when US President Donald Trump unilaterally withdrew the US troops from the 2015 Nuclear Deal the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action signed by Iran, China, France, Germany, Russia, UK, US and re-imposed on Tehran. The accord made Iran scale back the nuclear programme and decrease the uranium reserves to get the sanctions relieved. The Europeans had given efforts to save the accord and had stated this would be the best way to stop Iran from acquiring bombs, but Tehran had reduced its commitments after the response of the US’s withdrawal.

The statement by the ministry officials states that there were many countries listed by France, Germany, and the UK to aid during the crisis. Iran’s counterpart Special Trade and Finance Institute (STFI) and the INSTEX will be working out on some more transactions to enhance this mechanism.

The Iranian president had however extended the social distancing till April 8 as the number of positive cases had been increasing. Iranian Leader Ali Khamenei said that Iran wouldn’t accept aid from the US and states the US as their ferocious and vicious enemy.

34 democratic lawmakers including the presidential candidate Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt had sent a letter to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin which was backed by 13 anti-war groups on the 31st of last month requesting to relieve the sanctions on Iran to cope with the fatal pandemic.
