The continuous warning placed by scientists on the negative effect of plastic waste like wrappers, discarded packaging materials, not only on the environment but even the health of people. Dabur India Limited which is one of the largest manufacturers of Ayurvedic medicines in India has taken these warnings quite seriously and replied with a nationwide model for Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR).

By March 2022, Dabur plans to become plastic waste neutral. The efforts of the team have helped them collect, process, and recycle over 22,000 MT of post-consumer plastic waste by December 2021 from across the nation by, 3 months ahead of the target that they had set for themselves. With this, they are today a Plastic Waste Neutral organization, becoming maybe the first and only Indian company to achieve this landmark.

Dabur’s journey of EPR started in 2016 by appointing Nepra Environmental Solutions Pvt Ltd (NEPRA) which is an Ahmedabad-based waste management company solely for a waste assessment study of all their units. Each product gets wrapped in a different way and is labeled differently as well. They are packed in shrink film or mono cartoons differently, which forms the last stage of packing. In the last stage, they are dispatched in corrugated boxes that form in tertiary packaging.

Through this initiative of EPR implementation, they have avoided 6871,39 MT of CO2 emissions through recycling, saved 784 MT of CO2 through co-processing and waste-to-energy disposal, and even avoided 10356 MT of CO2 emissions through beverage carton recycling and entirely prevented a total of 18011.39 MT of CO2 emissions.
