Delhi – The capital of the country which is the most celebrated city seems to celebrate itself when it comes to crime. Almost 51% of the people in the city feels that crime have been a serious problem in their neighborhood, according to a recent survey titled “Safety Trends and Reporting of Crime (SATARC)”. The percentages were lower in Mumbai (16%), Chennai (5%) and Bengaluru (21%).
Its’ quite a matter of serious concern for the government as well as the police when Delhi tops in the list of 19 major cities accounting for the most vicious crime. The hollow assurances of gov’t becomes crystal clear when 40% of the rape cases and 29% of domestic violence which develop into cruelty to women and dowry death adorns the capital of country. Would it be called a matter of pride or shame for the gov’t which considers itself the government of people when national capital recorded the highest crime rate — 182.1 compared to the national average of 77.2? In a city where we have the giant corporates and industries which are an epitome of its grandeur, it seems that the kidnapping has emerged as a new industry. Almost 48.3% kidnappings and abductions have been decorating the capital where police promises to give prompt response. Out of the 2194 murders reported in the ten cities, 479 murders have been committed, accounting to 21.8%, is comparatively higher compared to other cities.
At the time when such crimes have been common it seems better to take a precautionary and introspect our policies. Even the gov’t needs to take immediate steps instead of just passing laws which are regularly violated by the anti-social elements. Even the police force which has the real access to the problems of the common masses needs to be more active in their approach.
