According to data from the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), the national capital saw about 25% fewer crimes against women in 2020 than it did in 2019, following the COVID-19 outbreak and lockdown. In 2020, 10,093 cases were reported in the city, compared to 13,395 cases in 2019, a decrease of 24.65% from the previous year. In 2020, Delhi had the greatest number of rape cases in the UTs, with 997.
According to the data, Delhi reported 1,840 occurrences of attacks on women with the intent to outrage their modesty in 2020, 2,938 cases of female kidnapping and abduction, nine cases of attempted rape, and one murder with rape or gangrape. The Delhi Police has consistently said that women’s protection is one of their top objectives.
According to NCRB data, there were 2,557 occurrences of cruelty by a spouse or his relatives (section 498 A of the IPC) in the national capital last year.
In 2020, there were 416 occurrences of insulting women’s modesty and 110 cases of dowry deaths (section 304B of the IPC), according to the report. There were two occurrences of acid attacks (section 326A of the IPC) last year, according to the report.
