Rising British sensation Emma Raducanu beat Leylah Fernandez of Canada to win the Women’s Singles title at US Open Tennis.
The 18-year-old Emma Raducanu defeated her Canadian opponent in straight sets 6-4, 6-3 in the summit clash held at the Arthur Ashe Stadium in New York last night. She has become the first British woman to win the title in 53 years. Raducanu has also become the first British woman in 44 years to win a Grand Slam singles title.
Britain’s Queen Elizabeth congratulated Raducanu on her success and said it is a testament to her hard work and dedication.
The 18-year-old Raducanu won 10 matches in a row-three in qualifying, seven in the main draw and became the first woman to win the US Open title without dropping a set since Serena Williams in 2014. Raducanu is the first British woman to win a Grand Slam trophy since Virginia Wade at Wimbledon in 1977. Raducanu also becomes the youngest player to claim the Grand Slam trophy since Maria Sharapova.
