As soon as the first set of Rafale fighter jet planes took off from France, a tweet from the French President Emmanuel Macron congratulating India went viral on social media. “Congratulations INDIA. Rafale on the way” reads the tweet.

The India Today Anti Fake News War Room (AFWA) and Times Fact Check have found that the tweet was made by a parody Twitter account of Macron. The twitter bio of the account itself mentions that.

However the social media users, believing that the tweet was made by the French president himself retweeted and shared screenshots of the same in thousands. While re- tweeting the viral tweet, many users have thanked Macron for delivering Rafales to India.

The Times Fact Check looked up the official and verified handle of Macron i.e. @Emmanuel Macron and found that it has 5.4 million followers. It has not tweeted anything on Rafale jets. The real, verified handle of Macron hasn’t made any congratulatory tweet to India on Rafale.

The parody account was created in January this year and has around 6, 000 followers and most of whom are Indians. The simplest way to call an account fake or parody account of bigger personalities is the absence of blue tick, which the real account of Macron must have.
