The United Nations General Assembly declared May 3 to be World Press Freedom Day or just World Press Day, observed to raise awareness of the importance of freedom of the press and remind governments of their duty to respect and uphold the right to freedom of expression enshrined under Article 19 of the 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights and marking the anniversary of the Windhoek Declaration.
Lot of life has been sacrifices; blood has been flown to achieve the democracy globally. Many countries in the world have been achieved democracy today. The efficiency of democracy depends on the four important pillars. Legislature, Executive, Judiciary and Media. In legislature, we have huge numbers of parliamentary in our parliament. The lots of research would indicate that majority of parliamentary have savior criminal cases against them and so if you see the education level and the literacy level of the parliamentary are equally very shocking. The Executive is a very important pillar. They all are literate. The IAS, Bureaucrats, IPS officers are coming under the executive part. But the desperate having the literacy part of it, the education part of it implementation of the law. Judiciary is group of very literate and higher qualifier lawyer, judge that we have in this country. But the number of cases pending in the judiciary court is massive and when a victim seeks justice from the judiciary then the pain is so much and the delay is so painful also. Media is the fourth pillar which ensures the effective functioning of the legislature, executive and judiciary.
On 3rd May we celebrate the world press freedom day but unfortunately the level of press from in our society and world has been high. India has 142 positions by world press day. This position is actually two positions lower as compared to last year. First Norway, for last four years continuously toping and Finland second and Denmark third. There should be case study that’s why these three nations are toping every year. The North Korea is in the lowest positioning comparatively Sri Lanka has good positioning but Pakistan has bad positioning.
The government is not facing the press challenge but also there are other challenges like market research is a biggest challenge. So many owner media today have gone into multiple businesses. The first generation owner was working very sincerely and they were committed with their work but the second and third generation journalist has different purposes. They wants to expanded their business and surplus their money into real estate businesses and also some hospitality has try to come in to media sector like sharda groups. Government as well as local pressure is also there in the media field. Some independent journalist were threatened by the landlord because the landlord threatened by the local politician. Earlier people who want to come in journalism have some ideals and some goals and some commitment, but there must have been a rise for desire of a certain lifestyle and salaries. The market situation, faulty business models, high cost of production, leading of compromise ethics and change in the lifestyle of the journalist and the local pressure, all there are combine together to create a compromise journalism today.
In this current situation corona is going to change not just the world but also media. The world is going too divided into two parts B.C. (BEFORE CORONA) and A.C. (AFTER CORONA
). Today print media which were already facing a lot of trouble on account of digitalization, on account of internet, much newspaper are already bound up in the west. The issue in this situation is PM Modi has applied to all media houses and everybody in the country that nobody led in this particular time, nobody is retained. Media is the forefront in the fight from corona and media person are risking their life for raveling the truth of corona. It is not fair that they are being led off and sent leave without pay. So the question is creating that where is the protection of the journalist. So we cannot talk about the freedom of press, the taught the being safeguarded and his interest being safeguarded and his job being secure that is the fundamental of freedom of speech and expectation. We have to secure this even the government have a role in that. There are need of provision like journalist welfare foundation in the information and broadcast ministry. We should put into good use our fraternity is really going to a very critical time and we should looking at it.
Journalist should more corporative trust to act as a cover. We are expecting to media to being independent and to be objective. But we have only ready to pay 2 to 3 Rs per newspaper, those production cost is not less than 30 Rs. It is important that the people have to pay what they had to consume. Concept of owning newspaper but the way you owning the house and the car cannot be accepted and there must be an enlightened ownership or a collective ownership. And not using it to make money as well as. From the govt side, they have to understand the enlightened free media is strength of a govt.
During the entire corona epidemic, we saw the entire media was behind Tablighi jamaat. But not a single media has rise these question to the government is that:
- In Tablighi jamaat issue, it was wrong to organize jamaat meet in middle of March. Who allow the Tablighi jamaat foreign delegate come with corona on 12th March?
- Who give them visa, whose check them at the airport?
- Who allow them to actually do the program for 10 days in heart of Delhi?
The challenge of facing media today is series of fake news. The role of the media has to find the original feet, the feet is that you are the watch down you are here not to parrot what others speak but analyze present facts, figures, investigation and analyze. Our country need to have more powerful media council of India, we should have within it preview not just the print media but also the electronic and digital media. It should have the judicial power. It should have a constitutional body which should give teeth to eat. Right now media just took as a tooth less tiger. So the government should give media more teeth that are more important for the regulators and it has to be the representative of the industry.
