The Policy Times in its uniquely transformative initiative to shed light on the new and pioneering innovation and start-ups in India brought “Global Innovator and Startup Series”. In the fourth series Mr. Akram Hoque, Founder-Editor of The Policy Times interviewed Mr. S.Nagarajan, Chairman & MD, Frontier Electrocomponantsand Systems Private Limited, one of India’s renowned personalities in the field of electro components.

Mr. Nagarajan, you have brought an unprecedented revolution in India’s electro-component sector and received many accolades for your contribution. Tell us about your journey in the electro component sector and how is it uniquely contributing?

I have done my MS in Manufacturing and MBA in Operations Management and have 25 years of experience in various companies, especially in electronic system design and manufacturing. I have come up with a novel idea for National Smart Grid Mission(NSGM) under the Smart Meter National Programme (SMNP) which could save space, energy waste, save time in assembly and testing during the manufacturing, and tons of government money. Our product is going to be used in all 25000 crores of newly installed Smart Energy Meters all over India. These Smart Energy Meters are going to save a lot of the nation’s technical and commercial costs. Our product is also used in all kinds of IoT-based products and we are bringing special products for Indian markets also.

The general perception is electronic manufacturing is very difficult in India. What are the challenges you face?

One of the major challenges in the electronic manufacturing ecosystem of India is that a lot of micro-level components are not produced in India, we have to largely depend on import that gap has to be reduced. The government’s National Policy of Electronics 2019 has helped people in the electronic manufacturing sector. The majority of innovations in India come from MSMEs and new entrepreneurs not from big companies but from the access to finance, cost of funding even to some extent lack of test labs poses a hindrance to bringing revolution and wave of R&D and new innovations in India’s electronic manufacturing sector.

Despite pressing challenges your firm Frontier Electrocomponents and Systems Private Limited won 3 awards for best R&D and innovation last year and you brought unique innovations, can you elaborate on those innovations and how they are going to help India and the world?

We brought unique innovative green micro-component and we are the only company in India to produce and design and manufacture products as well as the process from our end as well as suppliers and value chain as well.

What is a growing domestic and international expansion strategy?

Our immediate domestic expansion plan is in Assam and set up a facility there to manufacture Smart Energy Meters and IoT based product and create a center of innovation employability for people in North-East. My international growth plan is in Australia next year where we would set up a manufacturing and innovation facility there.

What kind of collaboration are you looking for in your growth strategy?

Mainlymanufacturers, to add to our comprehensive competence.

What is type of collaboration are in your mind for fundraising as earlier you mentioned it to be a challenge in the Indian electronic manufacturing sector?

In the year 2015 the government of India set up Electronics Development Fund with 10000 crores capital we are seeking to tap from that to set up our facility in Assam and as an alternative pathway, we would resort to venture to fund like all other entrepreneurs.

The series was chaired and mentored by Dr.P.Sekhar, Chairman Unleashing India, Global Smart City Panel, MTGF.

Dr. Sekhar in his concluding remark noted that Mr. Nagarajan has already got a lot of accolades which generally comes after a long time which means he has made a right start and brilliant innovation. India’s electro component market is worth billions but India’s export is unfortunately very less majority of it is import value even though a large amount of R&D is based in India. With innovators like Mr. Nagarajan coming up with brilliant innovation and taking up manufacturing of self-designed products can bring a new scenario in India’s electro component sector, not only value chain but a complementary supply chain also.
