It is seen sometimes that digital platforms like Facebook and WhatsApp remain down for some time. It sparks global outrage when this happens and people go berserk over the fact that they cannot use these services for some time. As we move forward to being digitally active, our technological means are improving day by day, but that does not mean there would not be any glitches in it. Thus, these small downtime moments can occur which we need to comply with, in the coming times.

Global outage as Google services go down

We have seen digital platforms being down sometimes. But it is rarely seen that Google services are disrupted. Be it Gmail, YouTube, or other Google services, there was a global outage that took place last Monday (14th December) that made people lose their mind as they could not even use email services as well. After the services were down, the Google workspace dashboard updated a status claiming that they are aware of the fact and they are working towards fixing it. The status update read, “We’re aware of a problem with Gmail affecting a majority of users. The affected users are unable to access Gmail. We will provide an update by 12/14/20, 5:42 PM detailing when we expect to resolve the problem. Please note that this resolution time is an estimate and may change”. It was 5.25 PM IST when the status was updated.

The reason behind it explained

The Google official spokesperson confirmed that there was a glitch in the system and it was due to the fact that the services were disrupted. The reason behind the same was “an internal storage quota issue” and they also apologize for the inconvenience caused to their users. “Services requiring users to log in experienced high error rates during this period. All services are now restored” they claimed and said that a “thorough follow up review to ensure this problem cannot recur in the future”.

Google promises to be more prominent in its services

The downtime moment lasted for about 45 minutes after which Google updated its status again and informed that the “system reliability is a top priority at Google, and we are making continuous improvements to make our systems better” to endure people of no further such issues. They are keen to fix the issue soon and we hope we would not have to face more such complications in the future.

The Policy Times suggestion

  • As these technical glitches keep occurring frequently, we need to understand that it is quite normal for these digital means as they are being operated in a large scale spectrum. There may be faults of any kind which may lead to such down moments of the platforms. We must comply with the facts and keep our trust in the services.
  • But on the other hand, giant digital platforms like Google and Facebook must also adhere to the fact that their services are used globally for various different purposes that include official usages as well. So, they must also keep working to fix these issues so that the users do not get affected while using these services.
