The world is already facing major issues with the ongoing pandemic situation. From losing almost 1.5 million lives to 69 million people being affected by the coronavirus globally, this pandemic has added to the woes of many people around the world. But hopes are surging high as some Pharma companies have been able to develop a vaccine against the virus that is under trial phase now. Pfizer is also one of them who developed an effective vaccine. But reports came in that 4 volunteers of the vaccine have developed bell’s palsy after they were administered with the vaccine doses.
The vaccine and the side effect
Pfizer-BioNTech developed the coronavirus vaccine that is in its human trial phase now. It is being administered to volunteers across the UK and recently four of them have developed bell’s palsy- a condition that causes temporary paralysis of the facial muscles. Basically, when a nerve of the facial muscle is swollen, inflamed, or compressed the condition of temporary paralysis occurs in the person. Though it is not confirmed that the vaccine has caused the condition, US regulator reports do not mull away the possibilities of the same.
Pfizer executive on the efficacy of the vaccine
Albert Bourla, Pfizer executive said that they have not “cut any corners” in production of the vaccine and that it has been “tested in the exact same way as we are testing any vaccine that is circulating out there”. He further added, “This vaccine actually was tested, because of the scrutiny, with even higher standards in terms of how we do things”. However, any ruling on the side effects of the vaccine cannot be ruled out because we do not know the nature of the virus yet.
FDA also waves a green flag at the vaccine
While Pfizer executives confront the public saying they took every measure to make their vaccine safe for the trials, the food and drug administration (FDA) authorities also asserted that the vaccine might not be the cause behind the people developing bell’s palsy and it might be some other reason why they developed the condition. FDA regulators also posted about their findings online and stated that they have vaccinated Britain’s oldest citizens with the accent shots and there are no casualties as of now. We can only hope that the vaccine comes with all clearance and heals the coronavirus effectively.
The Policy Times suggestion
- The vaccine developer must be alert about the side effects of the vaccines they are developing. They must also monitor the volunteers’ entire health before administering them with the vaccine as it can have unknown side effects on them, like in this case.
- The government must not allow such candidates to volunteer who already have some or the other kind of health complications. As because if they already have some complications, the administration of the vaccine may cause more harm to them.
