Nanocoated masks are made by a team of IIT Roorkee, which will be a game-changer for the frontline workers who are fighting with this fatal virus. The virus is made and tested to effectively kill the pathogens within 10-15 minutes of the contact. Professor Naveen K Naravani of Department of Biotechnical and Centre of Nanotechnology who led the research has stated The Statesman that facemask is a core component of the personal protective equipment (PPE), along with gown, gloves, and eye protection for frontline healthcare personnel. This nano-coating provides an additional layer of the protection against pathogens in existing masks and can curb the transmission risk of the disease”. This mask was developed by a four-member team including Pradeep Kumar, Arun Beniwal, and Ajmal Hussain.
The masks are made of the formulation of different clinical formulas. The formulation is highly effective against clinical pathogens such as Staphylococcus Aureus and Escherichia Coli O157. This formula also contains silver nanoparticles and plant-based antimicrobials which show synergies killing effect against the pathogens. A combined effect of more than three antimicrobial compounds was used for the development of formulation which can be coated on any surface. The price mixed for these masks made by the IIT Roorkee is very nominal, that is, Rs45.

IIT Roorkee researchers have used a 3D printer to create low-cost face shields to protect the frontline health workers fighting against Covid-19 at AIIMS Rishikesh. The spectacle like the design of the shield provides the ease of replacement as the transparent sheet is not bound to a reusable frame. The cost of each sheet is just Rs. 5 and mass manufacturing the face shields will come at Rs. 25 each. The first lot of 100 face shield was given to AIIMS Rishikesh.
“We commend the healthcare personnel for their relentless efforts in taking care of COVID-19 patients. I am sure these face shields will help in minimizing the transmission risk of the disease”, said Prof. Ajit K Chaturvedi, Director, IIT Roorkee. IIT Roorkee has also made a potable ventilator for the Covid-19 patients. They have named the ventilator “Prana-Vayu”, which is a closed-loop ventilator. The ventilator will be useful for a wide degree of congestion in the respiratory tract and is applicable for all age group patients, especially the elderly.
Thus, IIT Roorkee’s masks face shield, and ventilators have proved as a boon for the nation and especially the patients.
