With full of religious belief and festivities, Incenses have always been an important a part of all religious functions in India. Moreover, India has become one of the largest agarbatti and dhoop manufacturing country.

As per analysis, since the last few years agarbatti industry has been rising at 10% growth rate. Side by side, the dhoop industry has also been showing a certain growth and expected to grow with over 8% CAGR. The ongoing pandemic affected the industry and now it’s facing the short term crisis.

Accepting all challenges, the industry bounced back from the crisis. The government has announced several programmes in supporting to the agarbatti artisans. According to the new guidelines released on 4th September, The ministry has looked at all aspects of the industry, beyond just supply of machines for making agarbatti which includes ensuring supply of inputs and raw materials. The new programmes include:

  1. Supporting the artisans through training, raw material supplying, providing financial support and marketing.
  2. Helping in product innovation including fragrance and packaging, supply of bamboo sticks by working with Ministry of Agriculture, A ‘Center of Excellence’ for this purpose is being set up in FFDC (Flavour and Fragrance Development Center) Kannauj.
  3. Building 10 clusters with marketing linkages under SFURTI (Scheme of Fund for Regeneration of Traditional Industries) scheme of the Ministry of MSME at a total cost of about Rs. 50 Crs, to benefit about 5000 artisans for their sustainable employment and enhanced earnings.
  4. Strengthen the machine manufacturing capability to achieve self-sufficiency in the country and develop various other products by setting up ‘Centers of Excellence’ with IITs/NITs etc. at a cost of Rs. 2.20 crore.

The Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC), one of the legal associations, under the M/o MSME, will execute the program and will handhold the craftsmen and SHGs with appropriate in reverse and forward linkages and needful help. These programs will definitely boost the agarbatti industry and help further to build the agarbatti manufacturing with increased export, growing employment opportunities to the agarbatti artisans and entrepreneurs.
