Justice BV Nagarathna of the Karnataka High Court, Justice Hima Kohli of the Telangana High Court, and Justice Bela Trivedi of the Gujarat High Court are the three women justices proposed for the post of Supreme Court judges. According to rumors, India will have its first female Chief Justice in 2027, and Justice BV Nagarathna might be the first to be nominated to the prestigious position.
Justice Nagarathna was appointed as an Additional Judge of the Karnataka High Court in 2008, and almost two years later as a permanent judge. Notably, former Top Judge of India SA Bobde stated that the time has come to select the country’s first female chief justice.
The ex-CJI made the remarks while hearing a request from the Supreme Court Women Lawyers Association to consider appointing meritorious female lawyers as judges in the high courts.
“Why higher judiciary. We think the time has come when a woman should be Chief Justice of India. We have the interest of women in mind. There is no attitudinal change in it. Hopefully, they (women) will be appointed,” the SC bench comprising of CJI Bobde and Justices Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Surya Kant had said.
The CJI further stated that on numerous occasions, women attorneys declined offers to serve as judges, citing household obligations.
“Many women, when offered judgeship, decline saying their children are either in Class 10 or 12 and other domestic compulsions. It is not that all women say this. Many have accepted and have performed well… We have the interest of women in mind and are implementing it to the best of our abilities. You point out good women candidates and we will consider them for appointment as HC judges,” the ex-CJI had said.
