As per the list released by GHI in 2018, India was one rank below i.e. it was on the 103rd position. Therefore, we can say that there is a slight improvement this year but we if compare the position of India in the GHI list in 2017, which was 100, the condition seems to be only worsening with passing years. Countries like Bangladesh and Nepal have already left India behind if we compare the GDP growth rate of these countries. This new low must hurt India badly especially because its rival country Pakistan which was earlier behind India has now moved places ahead.
According to GHI countries below 100 suffer from a serious hunger issue as people in these countries have to face critical levels of hunger. This is quite opposite to the picture painted by the mainstream media in India which shows how the country is improving in terms of global recognition and politics. However, such news which must divert the attention of the people does not even appear vaguely in the newspapers and mainstream TV media these days.
Some people might argue that India is lower in the GHI list because of its vast population. However, we must inform you that the levels of hunger are not measured on the parameter of the population. Other parameters such as malnutrition of children, child stunting rate, child wasting, etc. are considered while deciding the rankings. Therefore, we can see that a country like China which is more populated than India is safely positioned at 25th rank in this list.
India’s child stunting rate is 37.9 percent and child wasting rate is high at 20.8 percent. Only 9.6 percent of kids who fall in the age group of 6 to 23 months are properly fed. These figures are shameful for a country that boasts to be a rapidly developing nation. However, India has improved in terms of sanitation facilities.

As per a survey conducted in 2015-16, 39 percent of Indian households did not have any sanitation facility but this seems to have improved with the sanitation facilities and cleanliness campaigns conducted by the Indian government in the recent past. GHI pointed out that even then a large part of the Indian population is defecating in the open. These findings and the latest GHI report will be a reason for embarrassment for the BJP and it might also hurt them in the coming Maharashtra and Haryana elections, the sources said.
