Is Myanmar trying to divert the attention of the international community?

The test has been about 10 times for internal conditions in the Rakhine province of the boat after the lesson in the use of more refugee’s interpretation analysis between Bangladesh and opening. Despite international pressure, the parties have not commented on the refugee protest. On the other hand, despite efforts to return the Rohingya community through the mediation of international organizations, the people of the Rohingya community have refused to return to Rakhine several times for fear of being tortured by the Myanmar military.

The magnanimity of Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has been revealed by allowing more than one million Rohingya refugees to stay in Bangladesh. This decision was completely out of politics only from the criteria of humanity. Although at that time this decision of the Bangladesh government was severely criticized by the opposition party. The Prime Minister’s decision to open the border and allow the Rohingya victims of brutality in Rakhine to enter Bangladesh despite knowing that these refugees could be a threat to Bangladesh’s economy and national security was also praised internationally.

However, this problem has not been solved even after a lot of time has passed. Different international communities working on human rights are in favor of Bangladesh, but big countries have not come forward in this regard. Although the issue has been presented to the international community on several occasions by Bangladesh, no positive solution has been reached so far due to the unwillingness of some of our neighboring powerful countries. Day by day the number of Rohingya population is increasing and these Rohingyas are spreading to different parts of the country which may cause a threat to the security of the country. Although the Bangladesh government is putting strong pressure on the international community, but those countries that can play a supportive role in decision-making at the international level are not playing a very strong role in the Rohingya issue, despite talking about human rights.

In the middle of this tension, the incident of throwing mortar shells from Myanmar to the border of Bangladesh for the past one month has given rise to fear in the public mind. On August 28, two mortar shells fired from Myanmar landed near the northern neighborhood of Naikshyongchari. As the mortar shells did not explode, the people of the area were spared from major accidents. Then on September 16, one person was killed and 6 injured when a mortar cell from Myanmar hit a Rohingya camp in Noman’s Land in Tambru on the border of Ghumdhum Union in Naikshyongchari, Bandarban district of Bangladesh. After the first mortar shell attack in Bangladesh on August 28, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Bangladesh called the ambassador of Myanmar and asked them to clarify their position in this matter. But the ambassador did not apologize for the matter and described it as an ‘unintended’ incident. Concerns were heightened when Myanmar launched a second attack on the Bangladesh border five days after summoning Myanmar’s ambassador.

On the other hand, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has summoned Myanmar’s ambassador to Bangladesh four times to express Bangladesh’s deep concern over airstrikes, airspace violations and mortar shelling inside Bangladesh.

But due to the continuation of this incident on the part of Myanmar, the question has arisen in the public mind that at this moment Myanmar wants to engage in any kind of conflict with Bangladesh? On this issue, the government of Bangladesh has clearly said that they do not want to engage in war with neighboring countries. Besides, the Home Minister also said that any kind of injury to the independence and sovereignty of the country will be dealt with firmly.

Under international law, the Myanmar Army’s activities within eight kilometers of the border are illegal and firing along the border with Bangladesh is also prohibited. The recent attacks by Myanmar are disrespectful to Bangladesh’s sovereignty, Bangladesh-Myanmar bilateral relations and regional peace. But the question is, why is this happening in Myanmar? There can be two reasons behind Myanmar’s provocative behavior towards Bangladesh. First, by creating a dire situation in Bangladesh in Burma and forcing Bangladesh through a civil war, it wants to stabilize all cooperation to delay the long-term immigration in question from the reverse. However, there may be a threat of mind penetration if the fierce war starts again. Second, Myanmar is indirectly inviting Bangladesh to war to divert the world’s attention from the junta’s atrocities in Myanmar, continued pressure from the international and regional community to resolve the Rohingya crisis, and increasing economic pressure on the junta government.

However, with these two fears, another fear cannot be ruled out. And this fear is that Bangladesh is involved in geopolitics and regional politics. If we judge the geographical location of Bangladesh, then Bangladesh is in a very important part of the Asia region. The main statement of Bangladesh’s foreign policy is to manage the country by maintaining friendship with everyone. Keeping this policy in mind, the Bangladesh government is maintaining friendly relations with all our neighboring countries. Bangladesh has historically had an important relationship with India as India’s contribution to Bangladesh’s independence war is undeniable. Besides, there has been a great development in the commercial relations of Bangladesh with China in the last decade. However, recently, Bangladesh has adopted a policy of slow progress in increasing trade relations with China, as it has been reported through the media that the issue has not been positively received by China. Although the Chinese foreign minister has already visited Bangladesh.

Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina visited India in the first week of September. Before and after this visit, the existence of mortar shells from Myanmar on the soil of Bangladesh has been questioned whether it is related to this visit. As the relations of Bangladesh with India are historically very good and the Prime Minister of Bangladesh may have requested the Prime Minister of India to stand by Bangladesh on the Myanmar issue besides discussing various bilateral issues with the Prime Minister of India. Since then, many have speculated that the matter was not taken very well by China. Both India and China have good relations with Myanmar as there are trade relations between the two countries. Since Bangladesh is trying to increase relations with India in the context of Myanmar, the possibility of inciting Myanmar by China cannot be completely ruled out, so this issue is being discussed in various media.

The Myanmar government has not officially acknowledged the week-long attack on Bangladesh, but Bangladesh is receiving support from the international community. On September 10, the High Commissioners of Malaysia, Canada, and the United Kingdom and the Japanese ambassador expressed their concern about Myanmar’s reckless attitude towards international law, as such incidents could negatively affect regional and Indo-Pacific security.

As a result, this matter cannot be seen as an isolated incident. The government of Bangladesh should increase pressure on Myanmar through the international community to respect international law. Although there are many types of events in this incident, I think that the Myanmar government may have caused this incident in an effort to divert the attention of the international community from the Rohingya issue. As a result, the government has to consider all matters seriously and take a decision on this matter.
