On June 28, commencing at 5:00 p.m. (local time; June 29, 0:00 a.m JST) for approximately 30 minutes, Mr. MOTEGI Toshimitsu, Minister for Foreign Affairs Japan held a bilateral meeting with Ms. Retno L.P. Marsudi, Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia during his visit to attend the G20 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting and Development Ministerial Session. The overview of the meeting is as follows.

The two ministers exchanged their views on the situation in Myanmar. In the beginning, Minister Retno explained the current situation after the Japan-Indonesia Foreign Ministers’ Telephone Talk on 10 June and ASEAN’s further efforts. Minister Retno renewed the request seeking support from Japan.

Japan-Indonesia Foreign Minister’s MeetingIn response, Minister Motegi stated that Japan supports the special envoy of the ASEAN Chair which will be nominated hereafter. Furthermore, he delivered Japan’s position on the activities of the special envoy and mentioned that Japan has continued to strongly urge the Myanmar Military to realize dialogues and to release those who are detained. The two ministers concurred to continue working in close coordination in order to respond to the situation in Myanmar.

Minister Motegi conveyed that Japan would provide COVID-19 vaccines with Indonesia. Furthermore, the two Ministers exchanged views on current regional situations.

Indonesia will be the Chair of G20 next year, and the two Ministers agreed to coordinate closely on the discussions in G20.
