The journalists of the country form a salient category of citizens, represented by the Indian Journalists Union. This union has appealed to the Central Government to treat journalists as frontline warriors and inoculate them against the novel virus on a priority basis.

IJU applauds the centre

IJU President and Secretary K Sreenivas Reddy and Balwinder Singh Jammu appreciated the government’s step to vaccinate every citizen free of cost and peg the vaccination cost to Rs.250 in private hospitals.

 IJU entreaty- Journalists on the forefront

Producing facts that hundreds of journalists in the line of duty across the country had surrendered to the contagious virus. The Journalists play a paramount role in the field contributing to the pandemic and render updates to the nation. Collecting databases on site has made them more vulnerable to the virus, in view of this fact, IJU has urged the government to protect the Journalists of the nation too on a priority basis.

Government aids for journalist

The Centre through the Press Information Bureau declared a subsidy of Rs 5 lakhs under the Journalist Welfare Scheme for candidates whose families succumbed to COVID-19. The Union requests the Centre to propagate this notice publicly through the Information departments of the states so that eligible families can avail it.

Regardless of the fact that these visual newsroom officials do not fulfil the role of an FLW, the threats they face are corollary with the Police Personnel. Hence, covering the Journalists of the nation under FLW’s should be mandated by law.
