He is the founder and General Secretary of Al-Ameen Mission based in West Bengal. He was awarded the Sir Syed Award’ by the American Federation of Muslims of Indian Origin (AFMI) in their 28th International Convention on Education and Gala Award program held in Bhubaneswar.

M Nurul Islam received the prestigious award on Thursday and during his speech he mentioned his journey and vision. He stated that he had a vision that was absurd for many, but he had his ambitions set right.

He stated that when he had begun the journey, it was only some 2 to 3%  of the Muslim population in West Bengal out of 25% were going for higher education whereas now the percentage has increased drastically to 20 to 25% in professional courses. He happily said that he feels proud that many of his students who have studied for free due to many problems under him were able to become engineers, teachers, etc which made him proud and also made him believe that his vision was not at all absurd but a fruitful one.

He also talks about his different motivations. He was always motivated by the Aligarh movement and its founder Syed Ahmed Khan. For instance, the one he got when he had visited Aligarh University where he saw that 30,000 students were studying there, where 15,000 were coming to college from their homes and the rest 15,000 were staying in hostels. This made him set up a goal to make facilities to preach education to almost 16,000 students alone which he is successful in doing it.

Talking about the COVID situations, he stated that he was devasted by the losses that have been going on and he planned that starting from 2022 he will arrange facilities to keep children of classes 2, 3, and 4 in his hostels and allot them in the 7-10 campuses for the almost 2000 children to prepare them for their future. He solely wants to take up the responsibility for the children.

M Nurul lastly encourages the people present to make use of the resources available to preach education among the children and people in our society. He has now set up a centre for learning which has produced almost more than 2,400 doctors and 2,500 engineers so far, also in other fields such as researchers, teachers, professors, and administrative officers.

M Nurul Islam is thus one of the educational icons who is a symbol of preaching education. He is rightly the perfect choice for such a prestigious award- “The Maulana Azad Award of Excellence”.
