A major report by the UN Population Fund’s 2021 stated that in 57 developing countries, half of the women do not have the right in making their own decisions to have sex with their partners and seek health care. The report also says that the women are not fully in control of their bodies.
Female Genital Mutilation(FGM)- A Bigger Risk For Girls and Women
The report says that each year, at least 4 million girls are at risk of undergoing the practice. In FGM, the external female genitalia is partially or fully removed. In many countries, FGM is aimed at controlling women’s and girls’ sexuality and their bodies and is a part of wider patriarchal practices. Due to FGM, women and girls are denied their rights to physical and mental integrity, freedom from violence, and freedom from gender discrimination.
When Will All the Countries End ‘Marital Rape’?
Till now also, a question mark remains that when the world will be free from ‘Marital Rape’? A study of 2011 highlighted the fact that most cases of marital rape in Uganda were committed against 15 to 19-year-old girls. 43 countries do not have any legislation that addresses the issue of marital rape. The victims of marital rape suffer psychological damage as well as physical injuries associated with forced sex, unintended pregnancies, and sexually transmitted infections.
TPT Policy Advocacy & Recommendations
- The whole world needs to understand that ‘Women are also human beings whose human rights matter’. Millions of women are denied the right to say no to sex or yes to the choice of marriage or to the right time to have a child. Women are not puppets. Their bodies belong to them. All the countries must make strict laws so that women are not devoid of any kind of rights. They must be given the freedom to have full control over their bodies.
- India is one of only 36 countries where marital rape is a perfectly legal crime. For the protection of women in India, many legal amendments have been done in criminal law but marital rape is still not criminalized. The Indian Government must impose laws to criminalize marital rape.
