Prominent Bengali writer Buddhadeb Guha is no more, leaves behind notable works

On Sunday, eminent Bengali writer Buddhadeb Guha died. He was the creator of several important works, including Madhukari (Honey Gatherer). He was 85 years old at the time.

Guha died of post-covid problems at a private hospital here on Sunday at 11:25 p.m., his relatives reported, following a major heart attack. The writer was suffering from post-Covid problems and had been hospitalized earlier this month after complaining of dyspnea and bladder infection, according to his family. His works of fiction showed his closeness to nature and the woods of eastern India. He had previously been hospitalized for 33 days because of Covid-19 in April.

Guha’s wife, famous Rabindra Sangeet exponent Ritu Guha, died in 2001, and he is survived by two children. He was born in Kolkata on June 29, 1936, and grew up in East Bengal’s Rangpur and Barisal districts (now Bangladesh). His childhood experiences and travels made an indelible impression on him, which eventually manifested itself in his works.

Critics have praised his books and short tales, earning him followers across the subcontinent and accolades such as the Ananda Purashkar in 1976, ShiromanPurashkar, and SharatPurashkar.

‘KoelerKachhe’ (Near the Koel bird) and ‘SobinoyNibedon’ are two of his most notable works, in addition to Madhukari (Humble Offering). Two of his pieces, ‘Baba Howa’ (Being a Father) and ‘Swami Howa’ (Being a Swami), was adapted into the award-winning Bengali film ‘Dictionary’ (Being a Husband).

He was also a prominent children’s author who created the fictitious characters Rijuda and Rudra, a hunter-turned-conservationist.
