Punjab gets its first breast milk pump bank opens in Ludhiyana

The Ludhiyana district in Punjab on September 10 opened the state’s first breast milk pumping bank in the premises of the mother and child unit in the Civil hospital.

In a first of its kind, Punjab has introduced a breastmilk bank where health workers will pump out the breastmilk from lilacting mothers to feed the newborns who are unable to latch the milk or mothers face severe pain while breastfeeding in the first four hours due to swelling or soreness.

A container has also been installed to store the breastmilk and as many as two electric pumps and 10 manual pumps, 16 containers, and one sterilizer have been given to the bank by the local administration.

Inaugurating the pump bank, municipal corporation councilor Mamta Ashu, additional deputy commissioner (development) Amit Kumar Panchal, and UT assistant commissioner Harjinder Singh Bedi, said the health workers will use the pumps to get breast milk immediately after the birth of infants and would feed them at regular intervals.
