Even though Arnab is a powerful journalist, he could not escape the judicial trials and proceeding over the suicide case of Anvay Naik. Maharashtra police said they have evidence against him and now, he is summoned to judicial custody till 18th November. Apart from him, 2 others are also arrested in the same case, who are identified as Nitesh Sharda and Feroz Sheikh.

The ‘case’ against Arnab

The case that is registered against Arnab is the abetment to a suicide case of a 53 years old interior designer (and his mother) who designed the studio of republic TV. The channel owed him 83 lakhs for the same and two other companies also owed him money which considerably amounted to a whopping 5.40 crores. Anvay and his mother were found dead in a farmhouse in Alibaug. The police found a suicide note which indicated that the payments were not cleared by the three companies due to which they had to commit suicide.

Arnab resisted the arrest, took one hour to open doors

In a surprising turn of events, Arnab and his wife took almost an hour to open the door of their apartment when police came in to arrest him. The police department also recorded a video to keep evidence of the entire sequence of events. The Alibaug SP reached Arnab’s house at 6 in the morning. They also took assistance from Mumbai police fearing that Arnab could create obstacles when they would try to arrest him and the same happened.

What political leaders are saying about the case

Our union minister Amit Shah commented on the arrest and termed it as “blatant misuse of state power” as the case was earlier closed and now it is reopened again which sparked rumors of the same. Broadcasting and information minister Prakash Javadekar also took to express his feeling regarding the incident and termed it as “an attack on press freedom” because republic TV is considered to be supporting right-wing philosophies. This has sparked outrage amongst the journalism world.

The PolicyTimes suggestion

  • The way Arnab presents news, targets on him is evident. Political business and powerful leaders can make his life miserable at the cost of anything. If he is proven guilty then the arrest is justified but if not, chances are there that his freedom of speech has been targeted maliciously. The judiciary must take the proper course of action to bring out the truth.
  • Arnab on the other hand must also refrain from targeting parties and individuals personally. He must present the actual news and do not make any false claims or put allegations on someone without any evidence.

Tribute to journalism:

Journalism is such a profession where you have all the right to speak the truth against anyone, no matter how powerful someone is! If today, Arnab is targeted by political leaders, it is not far when other journalists would also be targeted for “freedom of speech” and hence, the voice against traitors will be mulled down soon. Nonetheless, there are many fearless journalists who still exist and they continue to bring out the truth in the form of unbiased news.
