Shashi Tharoor, a former United Nations diplomat and member of the Lok Sabha, has lashed out at the US President Donald Trump over an attack on a Hindu priest in New York.
A New York Police Department (NYPD) spokesman said the 62-year-old victim, Swami Harish Chander Puri – a priest of the Shiv Shakti Peeth temple was taken to the hospital after being punched and hit with an object, believed to be an umbrella. The spokesman said the victim sustained cuts to his head, nose, chest, arms and legs. Police have arrested a 52-year-old and have charged him with felony assault and harassement in the second degree. It is alleged that the attacker yelled ‘this is my neighborhood’ as he beat the priest. However, investigators have ruled out hate crime as a motive.
Tharoor took to Twitter to condemn the incident. “When the US President targets immigrants and encourages chants of ‘send her back’ at rallies, real harm is inflicted on innocents,” he said. “Swamiji was attacked on Thursday by a man who reportedly screamed ‘this is my neighborhood’. Thankfully this advocate of compassion and harmonious co-existence is recovering from from injuries. The danger of bigoted language, increasingly apparent in our India, hurts the US too,” he wrote.
Ever since Trump took up presidency of the United States, there has been an increase on immigrants and people of different races throughout the country. Senator Amy Klobuchar, in an interview with CNN noted the spike in attacks. “There has been an increase in hate crimes. There has been an increase in very negative rhetoric at groups,” she said.
