According to a fresh notification by the railways, it has been known by far that both the platform and the travel ticket price have been increased. So, now if a person travels from Delhi to Ghaziabad, he has to pay Rs 30 instead of Rs 10.

Why Fare Hike is considered a “Temporary Measure”?

The Ministry of Railways stated in a statement that the hike in the ticket price is a “temporary measure” to prevent overcrowding at stations amidst the global pandemic. He said, “Regulation and controlling of the crowd at stations is the responsibility of DRMs. It is a temporary measure and field activity undertaken by a railway administration in the interest of the safety of passengers and to prevent overcrowding at stations”.

Motive Behind The Price Hike

To prevent the spread of Covid-19 due to overcrowding, the Indian Railways took such a necessary step. In the last year also, due to the global pandemic, there was a surge in the ticket price up to Rs 50. The increase in the short-distance travel cost was aimed at discouraging unnecessary travel during the global pandemic.

TPT Policy Advocacy & Recommendations

  • On one hand, the increase in the price hike will have a severe impact on the common people but on the other hand, the spread of the virus will be lessened to some extent. So, somehow, this move of the railways can be a welcoming one too!
  • The Government must also keep in mind that the fare hike is maintained for a temporary time period. Otherwise, the hawkers in the train will suffer at a certain level as the fewer the passengers of the train, the less will be their income.
