The government has allowed the tech industry to work from home or work from anywhere under the OSP guidelines provided by the department of telecom. Most of the compliance requirements and registration are completed. However, the BPO industry that works on data-related matters is taken out of the ambit of the Other Service Provider (OSP) regulations.

Policies removed/reformed to adjust the new normal

Some of the government policies have been reformed to adjust to this move. Like deposit of bank guarantees, the publication of network diagrams, static IPs, penal provisions, frequent reporting obligations, etc. has been removed from the OSP regulations so that data-related work doesn’t go unethical. Several other such reforms have been adjusted by the government to make the practice more engaging. The key demand of this policy is to keep the employees safe in this time of pandemic and also maintain the workflow in a way that ensures the Indian economy does not suffer.

Our PM also welcomed the move

In a bid to support this move, our PM Narendra Modi Ji tweeted, “Committed to furthering ‘Ease of Doing Business’ and making India a tech hub! GoI has significantly simplified Other Service Provider (OSP) guidelines of the Telecom Department. Compliance burdens of the BPO industry will be greatly reduced due to this.” He also expressed that the government will walk all the paths which will lead to “growth and innovation” in India.

It will fast track working abilities

The ITeS and IT industry has set a target of $190 billion in the coming years and thus to fast-track the working capabilities, this move shall be beneficial to the entire tech industry. The electronics and IT ministry have charted an “inter-ministerial” group with the ministry of labor, telecom, and eCommerce to boost WFH and make relaxations in the way of work. The working ability of individuals will also increase as they will be able to give more time and energy to their work which they had to waste on commuting to the office.

The PolicyTimes suggestion

  • This is a great move taken by the government which will not only cut the corona risk among the employees but also facilitates creativity in work ethics. The other industries must also take a cue from this move and implement the same if possible.
  • Even though work from anywhere is allowed, there may be malicious practices in some cases where important data can be misused. So, the industry that allows remote work must keep this in check.
  • The governments must also make policies that restrict any kind of misuse of data even though several employees work from home. It will also create a good working environment amongst employees.
