People in the United Kingdom have stated that they are willing to accept Afghan refugees. The British government has established the Afghan Citizens’ Resettlement Scheme, which aims to house at least 20,000 individuals in the short and long term in order to protect them from the Taliban.
Local councils will collaborate with the government on where to rehabilitate refugees and how to ensure they have the greatest results while in Britain under the program. A short search on social media reveals that there are already individuals willing to welcome migrants into their homes.
Prime Minister Boris Johnson stated that 5,000 persons will be eligible for resettlement in the United Kingdom during the first year of the initiative, with women and girls given preference. “We owe a debt of appreciation to everyone who has worked with us over the last twenty years to make Afghanistan a better place,” he added.
“Many of them, particularly women, are now in desperate need of our assistance. I am delighted that the UK was able to establish this route to assist them and their families in living safely in the UK.”
People judged to be at the greatest danger of human rights violations and dehumanization at the hands of the Taliban will also be prioritized. An additional 15,000 refugees will be accepted to the UK on a “long-term” basis.
The initiative is in addition to the 5,000 Afghan interpreters and other personnel who served for the UK throughout the country’s 20-year conflict as part of the Afghan Relocations and Assistance Policy. Under that plan, 2,000 individuals have already been allowed to relocate to the United Kingdom.
