The world suffers from the impact of the coronavirus that is believed to have originated from China. Thus, WHO has formed a panel to look into the animal origins of the virus so that the picture becomes clearer. The investigation reports were not made transparent to the UN members and thus the US officials doubt there might be something that China is hiding from the world. It also questioned the role of the UN in controlling such future pandemics.

The data would prove to be useful for all of us

As we are in the middle of the pandemic, any info or data about the disease would prove to be helpful for all of us in many ways. Thus, the details about the china probe by the WHO panel would be beneficial if the actual data comes out. In this regard, a US official, Garrett Grisby said, “Understanding the origins of COVID-19 through a transparent and inclusive investigation is what must be done.” He also added that there must be transparency in the investigation and that the findings must be shared with the other WHO members.

China plays foul

It has been stated that China is hiding something from the world. They have not informed the world about the corona virus for a minimum of 6 days and the numbers that they are providing might also not be accurate. The research and findings going on in china regarding the coronavirus are also kept a “secret” by the authorities. Former New Zealand PM and Co-chairperson of the probe panel Ms. Helen Clark says, “The independent panel will do its best to shed light on what has happened, is still happening and why” to make the investigation more transparent.

WHO director-general cries “funds” shortage

In the midst of this, WHO director-general Tedros Adhanom asked for more funds to carry out the probe in china. He said that the agency’s budget was as low as the world’s tobacco consumption budget of a day. Former US President Donald Trump had halted the funding of the US to the WHO and said he would pull out the US from the agency. But now, as Joe Biden has won the elections, it can be expected that this won’t happen and the “funds” shortage would not be an issue further.

The PolicyTimes suggestion

  • The entire world was affected majorly due to coronavirus. In such times if the probe led by WHO brings any comfort, that would be highly appreciated and helpful for preparing vaccines and preventing further domination of the virus as well. Thus, they must not hide any data and provide all the details about the corona probe being carried out in china.
  • The UN members and the other nation’s heads must make policies to ask WHO officials to give the details into the probe. If they do not comply with the rules, then actions must be taken against them.

China, on the other hand, must also help the officials with the probe so that they are not targeted by the world political leaders. There must be a fair investigation to understand the root cause of the virus and to also know its cure.
