The Year 2020; Do We Want To Remember It Or Forget It?

The year 2020 has proved to be a “memorable” year in many aspects. Yet people do not want to keep it in their “memories''... Why?

From the onset of the pandemic to being caught in a lockdown and from facing an economic crisis to witnessing some massive disasters, the year 2020 will be in our (haunting) memories for a long time. Not only India but the entire world has suffered a lot this year but is everything going to be normal in 2021?

TIME magazine declared 2020 the “worst” year

The TIME magazine had drawn a red “X” over the year 2020 declaring it to be the worst year in the history of the world. Though it has mentioned that there have been worse years before, like during the time of the wars or during natural disasters, the way 2020 has affected people globally is not at par with those ‘worse” years, but above them. None of us were prepared for the situations we are in today. Not only are we in fear of the coronavirus, but we are also on the verge of facing a severe economic crisis. Stephanie Zacharek, the TIME film critic wrote, “The rest of us have had no training wheels for this – for the recurrence of natural disasters that confirm just how much we have betrayed nature; for an election contested on the basis of fantasy; for a virus that originated, possibly, with a bat only to upend the lives of virtually everyone on the planet and end the lives of roughly 1.5m people around the world”.

Some instances to look back at

Not only has the pandemic followed by the lockdown added to the disasters of the year 2020, but it has also seen much more than that! The economic crisis, the falling down of the GDP rate, Australian bushfire burning, Indonesian flash floods, arrival of a swarm of locusts in parts of Asia and the middle east, cyclone Amphan in India and Bangladesh, death of popular stars like Chadwick Boseman, Kobe Bryant, and Indian stars like Irfan Khan, Rishi Kapoor, Sushant Singh Rajput, etc. also added to the woes of the common people in addition to the pandemic and the lockdown period.

Expectations from 2021

Though there is no 100% accuracy of a vaccine being suitable to prevent the spread of the coronavirus, hopes are still high that some vaccines may actually prove to be worthy enough to fight the virus. Currently, Pfizer, Bharat biotech, and Moderna are some Pharma companies that are on the verge of presenting a vaccine to the common people. If these trial phases get completed successfully then we can hope that the year 2021 will bring with it positivity and end the fear of corona from our lives.

The Policy Times suggestion

  • Though we are in the middle of the pandemic and have gone through many shocks in the current year, we shall not lose hope and expect situations to normalize soon.
  • With the news of getting a vaccine in the beginning of the year 2021, hopes are high that we may resume our pre-pandemic normal lives sooner. We must pray and hope that it happens in an expected manner!
