The ongoing pandemic has changed the dynamics of our lives at many levels. Not only the common people but the government is also struggling to control the situation. Nevertheless, there are some touts who are taking advantage of this situation and duping people of their money. The recent case is that of producing fake railway tickets for unreserved passengers. Dupers are printing fake tickets with changed passenger details.
The fake ticket creation process
The railways have not functioned since the beginning of the pandemic. Off late, the train services have resumed functioning again but with limited options. The ticket booking procedure is not like before and the waitlisted candidates are not allowed to board the train. Since the number of passengers traveling has increased a lot post-lockdown, people are finding it hard to book a ticket for themselves on the train. So, the touts are taking advantage of this and printing the tickets on original looking papers and using the same train, berth, and PNR numbers, and changing the name of the original passengers.
Hard times for the ticket checkers
When two passengers (one fake and the other original) get the same berth on the same train, there has to be a scuffle between the two parties. And that is precisely the case in most situations. The ones with the original ticket find it very hard to deal with the other co-ticket holder. And the ticket checkers have tougher times sorting the issue as spotting the difference between the original ticket and the fake ticket is not easy. “It’s a tricky situation for checkers as well. They have to both handle the fight between passengers and also convey who the rightful claimant of the berth is,” said a railway officer.
The pandemic aftermath is scary
Since the lockdown has been imposed due to the covid 19 pandemic, many people lost their jobs and the economic condition of the country stooped below risk zones. So, such frauds and scams are sure to take place. Though the investigation teams are being very active in limiting such instances, it is anyway tough for them too! Not even this, the senior citizen’s quota tickets are also being misused by the scammers. The common people who are trusting against their tickets are crying foul when charged with the case of cheating since they have no idea of what has happened. “We need to ensure social distancing and can’t permit unreserved passengers. Our appeal is to travel with valid tickets and not fall in the trap of touts,” the chief PR officer of the central railway said in a statement.
The Policy Times suggestion
- As the entire nation is experiencing tough times in terms of financial stability, it is evident that such scams would take place increasingly to fill the gap. But, not only the authorities but the commoners must also be aware of the fact and should not believe every other agent they go to, for the tickets.
- In today’s time, digital means have become so fast and easy. Most of us have a smartphone at home in which there are several apps through which railway tickets can be booked. People must use these platforms to book a ticket so that they get e-tickets against their bookings where chances of fraud are nil.
