Pakistan has long been a non-NATO ally of United States. However, after the cold war, slowly but surely India has moved closer to United States and Pakistan has moved away. The acts of terrorism and the state’s overt support towards it are the cause for such swapping of US’ preference. On the grounds of Afghanistan and Iraq war, there is a deep rooted hatred towards US by the common people of Pakistan. The successive governments made no efforts to alleviate the anti-US feelings, which indicate that Pakistani governments had covert support towards it. However, in doing so, Pakistan has become a sort of outcast to the western society. Probably their unchecked downhill fall presaged a need for a turnaround.
The recent event by the Pakistani securities in saving the American-Canadian couple with the children from the clutches of the terror organization, Haqqani network, is a case in point. This has drawn favorable remarks from President Trump after a scathing attack on Pakistan a few weeks ago.
“I have openly said Pakistan took tremendous advantage of our country for many years, but we’re starting to have a real relationship with Pakistan, and they’re to respect us as a nation again, and so are other nations,” Trump said.
New Delhi on the other had is silently observing the development. There is reason for India to be skeptical as it took many years of strategic effort to get closer to United States and drive away Pakistan from the status of being an ally of America.
However, it cannot be denied that Pakistan is very strategically located. Without the help of Pakistan, it is difficult to deal with chaotic Afghanistan and accessing the Central Asian republics. Although, Indian foreign office is concerned about the development, there are two aspects to it. One, India must convince Trump that US can support Pakistan on the condition that will not spread terror in the world and to India in particular. US have been giving lip service to it for long, but they should implement it from now on. Two, a tripartite good relationship among Pakistan, US and India is not a bad option for India. A good relationship with Pakistan can reduce tension in the border areas, especially in Kashmir. It will also reduce casualty of our armed forces and can provide them a better life. With China and Pakistan being all weather friends, taking on both of them can be very myopic.
