On Wednesday, Biden’s administration declared that it would provide $235 million in U.S. aid to the Palestinians. Antony Blinken, U.S. Secretary of State stated that this effective step is an effort to repair ties with the Palestinians.
Relation Between U.S. and Palestine
On January 20, US President Joe Biden took office after which he promised to take some steps that would repair their relations with the Palestinians. For a long time, the US has always been a staunch defender of Israel but the former President had taken the relationship to new heights. In 2018, Trump cut US assistance and blocked all aid to the Palestinians. Biden had pledged to restore US aid for Palestinians but his administration has refused to reverse some of the decisive policies of Donald Trump on the conflict. A major report stated that the administration of Biden sees resuming funding to the Palestinians “as being critical to resolving the Palestinian-Israeli conflict”.
Funding of U.S. -An Important Support For Palestinians
Biden’s administration was much pleased to announce the plan to resume the U.S. funding. Blinken said, “The United States is pleased to announce that, working with Congress, we plan to restart U.S. economic, development, and humanitarian assistance for the Palestinian people”. Ahmed Abu Huly, a member of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) stated that he would hold a zoom meeting to express his sincere gratitude and appreciation for such important support by the U.S. The contribution of the U.S means a lot to the Palestinians.
TPT Policy Advocacy & Recommendations
- Biden’s administration must bring in some strategic plans so that they could make sustainable progress towards peace with the Palestinians. During Trump’s administration, the diplomatic channels of communication with the Palestinians were halted. So, it is expected that the new administration will take the necessary steps to re-open it.
- Biden is such a leader who wants to maintain peace at all levels. The President must keep an eye on the new plans being taken, so that alongside a viable Palestinian state, Israel also lives in peace and security.
