Vijaya Roy was a prominent Indian writer and actress. She was the wife of world-renowned Indian filmmaker Satyajit Ray. Their son Sandeep Roy is an Indian film director. Before marriage, Vijaya and Ray were related.

After a long love affair, Ray and Vijaya Roy got married in 1944. Vijaya Roy acted in a Bengali film called Shesh Raksha in 1944 and provided the backing vocals.

In 1999, Vijaya Roy also acted in the documentary Catherine Berg’s Tree. He died of severe pneumonia in Calcutta at the age of 99.

Vijaya Roy was the youngest of four sisters. His elder sister Sati Devi was also a famous musician who worked with Uday Shankar at Almora and Prithvi Theater in Bombay.

And Sati Devi’s daughter Ruma Guha Thakurta was a well-known personality in the world of music and acting, who married the legendary singer Kishore Kumar.

Although Vijaya Roy did not act in many films, he had a versatile acting talent. The then famous singer Kanak Das (Biswas) was his father-aunt.

Vijaya Roy grew up in Patna and was educated there. He had a talented voice and his father wanted to send him to Paris to learn soprano and train in Western classical music.

In 1933, at the age of thirteen, his father died. He then moved with his mother and sisters to the house of his paternal uncle Prasanta Das in Calcutta. It was here that he met his cousin Ray.

They were attracted to each other and both had an interest in film and Western classical music. She graduated from Jogmaya Devi College, Calcutta Women’s College.

After graduation, she worked as a teacher at Bethune School and Kamala Girls School in Calcutta and for a short time as a clerk in a government office. He later quit his job and moved to Bombay to start his career in film.

He acted in a few films without success or satisfaction. In 1949, she married Satyajit Ray, her cousin. Their only son Sandeep was born in 1953.

Vijaya Roy was the inspiration for Ray’s life. After the death of her husband in 1992, she lived in Calcutta with her son Sandeep, daughter-in-law Lalita, and grandson Souradip.

He wrote an autobiography called “Our Talk” ISBN 81-7756-687-3 which was published by Ananda Publishers. He died of pneumonia on June 2, 2015.

The films that Vijaya Roy has acted in are Shesh Raksha (1944), Mashal (1950), and Rajini.
