The Policy Times organized an hour-long Unleashing India Web summit was held on India’s Maritime Interests & Harnessing of the Blue Economy for national reincarnation on Friday, July 3 from New Delhi. The main purpose of the webinar was to emphasize the blue economy and the taken initiative because India as a nation needs to adapt and executor achieve the blue economy vision as blue economy sustainability is needed for economic growth for improved livelihoods, huge employment opportunity and secured Ecosystem health.

The Web summit was chaired by Dr. P. Sekhar, the Chairman of Global Smart City Panel MTGF, and was moderated by Mr. Akram Hoque, the Founder- Editor of The Policy Times with two eminent expert speakers, Admiral R K Dhowan, PVSM, AVSM, YSM (Retd) Former Chief of Naval Staff, Indian Navy and Prof. V. N. Attri, International Authority on Blue Economy, Chair in Indian Ocean Studies (CIOS), the IORA Secretariat.

The show was moderated by Mr. Akram Hoque. In his introductory speech, Mr. Hoque said, “Blue Economy is a subject that should be taken as an initiative to work in, and especially in India, because India as a nation, we need to adapt and execute or achieve the blue economy vision”.

The chair of the session Dr. P. Sekhar stated, “Blue Economy is a neglected but very fascinating field and it is going to have a huge impact on India’s Economy. Blue Economy itself has got various sets of definition; it started with the green economy and the blue economy which had a different purview.”

Admiral R K Dhowan explained, “Today India’s vast maritime interest and how they impact and have relationships with the nation’s economic growth to harness the blue economy in line with the vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat or Self- Reliant India so as we can have a revival of the nation’s economy in the post Covid environment.”

India is essentially a maritime nation with natural outflow toward the seas and oceans, as we in India need to look outwards towards the seas which surround us and it also brings home the fact that we are heavily dependent on the oceans and the seas for our external trade for our resources for our economic well- being and prosperity and for our maritime security. As a maritime nation, India sits astride busy sea lines of communication which transit across the Indian Ocean over 120, 000 transit area carrying 66% of the world’s oil, 50% of the world’s container traffic and 33% of the world’s cargo traffic.

He also added, “In the past few years with the help of our Honourable PM, we have had series of initiatives for sustainable development in the maritime domain along with the quests to harness the blue economy. Blue Economy has emerged as a new paradigm and I would like to define the harnessing of the blue economy as the development of all our maritime interests by optimal utilization resources with minimum impact on the environment to ensure sustainable development of the oceans”.

“I view Blue Economy in a position to ensure the global view, what is happening in blue economy as well as suggesting some ways of implementing blue economy.” Stated Prof. V. N. Attri. After COVID 53 countries are facing a crisis of national debt. To sustain the Blue Economy many minstrel conferences and meetings are being held, the last meeting was held in Bangladesh in 2019, which was a great success and Bangladesh is one of the countries in IORA who have systematically and to a great extent implementing the blue economy and in the next five to seven years Bangladesh will be getting a status of high middle-income countries through implementing the blue economy. For sustaining the blue economy we need to create a blue economy among our youth, we need to be optimistic, innovative, and adhere to sustainability.

In his concluding remarks, Dr. P Sekhar asked for suggestions and what should be done for saving the blue economy. He said, “Nature gave us land and water but nature has given us much more amount of water than land for reasons, and whatever one is doing should keep in mind these two things and should do managing these two innovations of nature. Let Blue Economy Wash Covid out and bring prosperity to our nation”.

Mr. Hoque concluded the session and thanked the entire panel for being a part of the session. Mr. Hoque said, “I only had one vision that we should establish institution’s or organizations that becomes pillar or instrumental platforms to boost India’s growth, development and sustainability, and so we thought blue economy will be one among the few agendas or initiatives that we will be very happy to work under your guidance, to make some visible change on the ground”.
