An extraordinary virtual G20 meeting took place this 26th March to discuss the challenges at the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. Leaders of the G20 countries decided to infuse in the global economy for the fiscal policy across the world to cope up with unemployment across the world. The extraordinary G20 Summit was an apex of the Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors Meeting and G20 Sherpas’ Meeting on the COVID-19 pandemic.
The leaders pledged to “Do whatever it takes to overcome the pandemic” along with WHO and other international institutions. The G20 leaders have been showing their immense unity since the financial crises of 2008-2009. Even now they are determined to focus on the health of the people and to stop the virus and look after the inflow of the medical supplies irrespective of the borders and will try and eradicate the supply chain disruptions faced by many countries.
The meeting was hosted by the current G20 chair, Saudi Arabia; King Salman addressed the leaders from Riyadh which was also attended by the US President Donald Trump and the Chinese President Xi Jinping. This was the first-ever meeting attended by all the leaders amid the world crisis. The King says this human crisis needs a global response to fight through all the possible challenges.
The Leaders took into consideration the sensitive and vulnerable countries like Africa and necessary help will be aided for their excess of the refugees their financial and health facilities. The G20 group urged the International Monitory Fund and The World Bank to support and extend their full support to rescue the world from the crisis. It has been reported that the IMF Managing Director notifies that the $50 billion funds might be asked to double for the countries to fight the epidemic.
WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus requested for the increase in the funding and the production of the Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for the health workers. The host King of Saudi expressed his Gratitude towards the medical worker across the world and appreciated postponing the Olympics as well. PM Modi thanked the King for conducting this extraordinary session of G20.
“We are strongly committed to presenting a united front against this common threat,” added the G20 leaders.
